My grandmother often tells me about her childhood in a small village near Sétif. When she was young, there was no electricity in the houses. People used to get up very early and go to bed soon after sunset. Women used to fetch water from the well, and children used to walk several kilometres to school.
Life has changed a lot since those days. Our village has had electricity since 1975, and most families have owned a car for many years. Today, children go to school by bus, and they communicate with their friends through their phones. My grandmother says that life is more comfortable now, but she misses the solidarity of the old days, when neighbours used to share everything.
